BCCI expected Rohit Sharma to retire after leading India to Champions Trophy triumph: Reports

New Delhi: Speculation over Rohit Sharma’s future in the Indian cricket team refuses to die down even after his retirement from Test cricket.

Rohit had retired from T20Is last year after leading India to the T20 World Cup title in the West Indies and then quite red-ball cricket last month after a disastrous Australia tour.

After a 3-1 defeat in Australia, where he was dropped from the team for the fifth Test in Sydney, pressure mounted on the right hander to leave the Test arena.

He didn’t announce his retirement from five-day cricket till May, hoping for a farewell few matches in India’s upcoming five-match series in England that begins from June 20.

But reports suggested the national selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India weren’t keen to include him in the squad to England, forcing his exit.

Similarly, his long-time team-mate and former skipper Virat Kohli also quit the traditional favour after reportedly falling out of favour in the eyes of the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee.

Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s Test skipper while Suryakumar Yadav is currently the T20I skipper.

Now fresh reports have emerged that cast doubts on him leading the ODI team further even after leading the team to Champions Trophy victory.

It has been suggested that the BCCI is keen to avoid having three captain in three formats and keeping in mind Rohit’s advanced age, he would be 40 during the 2027 ODI World Cup, the selectors are looking to groom someone much younger for the hot seat.

“Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors over his ODI future,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.

Rohit, however, had dismissed suggestions of him retiring from the 40-over format after guiding India to Champions Trophy glory.

“One more thing. I am not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure there are no rumours spread moving forward. Thank you so much,” Rohit had said after India beat New Zealand in the CT final.
