New Delhi: American actress and model Kourtney Kardashian recently opened up about her challenging journey of motherhood and how she battled through the process of conceiving her baby. In an Instagram post, Kardashian talked about how she endured five failed IVF (In vitro fertilization) and 3 retrievals before successfully getting pregnant with her son Rocky.
In a Q&A section on her Instagram, the model responded to all the questions of the fans. Answering one of the users, she said that after trying for a year to get pregnant through IVF, in which 5 failed and 3 retrievals, her body relaxed and she got pregnant 100 per cent naturally. This raises a concern that IVF may not be the final destination for many and what are the possible reasons behind IVF failures?
What could be some factors behind IVF failure?
In conversation with News9, Dr Sneha Sathe, Fertility Consultant, Nova IVF Fertility, Chembur, Mumbai said, “Age factor can be a reason behind failed IVF. As a woman ages, her egg quality and quantity decline. Also, the risk of genetic abnormalities in the eggs increases. Hence, with advancing age the chances of conceiving naturally and even with IUI or IVF decrease. And the risk of miscarriage increases.”
Smoking, obesity, and unhealthy lifestyles such as poor eating habits and lack of exercise are associated with reduced fertility and also hurt IVF outcomes.
Lifestyle modifications such as exercising, eating a balanced healthy diet, seeking counselling to manage stress, maintaining an optimum weight, sleeping well, and seeking timely help and advice for general health and fertility issues can go a long way.
Are poor sperm quality the reason behind failed IVFs?
Dr Sathe further went on to explain, “If an IVF cycle fails it is important to try and address the ‘why’ before embarking on another cycle. Go over your medical history and all previous test results with your doctor. Discuss the role of further investigations. Poor sperm parameters and high sperm DFI can lead to poor embryo quality and failed IVF.”
“The doctor will go over your stimulation protocol and based on ovarian response may decide about making any alterations in the protocol. Discuss egg and embryo quality. If the previous embryo transfer was a day 3 transfer, talk to your doctor about blastocyst culture. If a Hysteroscopy has not been done previously, you may need to consider that before going ahead with another embryo transfer. Also, it is important to discuss the role of ERA and genetic testing (PGT-A) depending on your age and other factors.”
