New Delhi: A photo of Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina is taking the internet by storm. So much so, that social media users and experts are labelling the photo as the ‘The picture of the 2024 Olympics’.  The photo shows Medina, 30, in a gravity-defying pose during the surfing competition at the 2024 Games in Tahiti, part of the French territory.

The incredible photo was captured by AFP photographer Jerome Brouillet, who clicked the picture of the Brazilian Olympian Medina in mid-air well above the water, with his board seen at his side.

After the picture went viral, social media users couldn’t keep calm as reactions and comments flooded the internet.

Medina registered the highest surfing score in Olympic history with a 9.90. The incredible picture was taken during Medina’s round three clash with Kanoa Igarashi. He won the contest with a combined two-wave score of 17.40 out of a possible 20. Medina will take on fellow Brazilian Joao Chianco in the quarter-finals.

Why is the Olympic surfing event happening in Tahiti?

Those who are wondering why the Olympic surfing event is happening 16000 km away from Paris, would be surprised to know the reason. The decision to host the surfing event in Teahupo’o, Tahiti was made because the Olympic committee wanted to highlight French territories worldwide, not just the country itself.

The incredible image would help raise the stocks of surfing, a sport that debuted in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
