New Delhi: Air India placed a fresh order for jets from French jetmaker Airbus on a day when the doyen of Indian industry and Tata Group chairman emeritus Ratan Tata was laid to rest with full state honours. Air India, which returned to the Tata Group after nearly 70 years in 2022 on Ratan Tata’s watch, ordered 85 airplanes from Airbus.
Air India has also ordered 75 narrowbody A320 jets from Airbus as part of the 85 aircraft deal, according to the people cited above.
Air India and Airbus did not comment on the development. As of Wednesday, Airbus has received over 600 jet orders so far this year, including a revised 85 jet order from an airline which was not named by the French jetmaker. This order comprised 20 A320 neo jets, 55 A321 neo planes, 5 A350-900s aircraft and 5 A350-1000 jets, according to the statement.
Air India’s record jet order
In 2023, Air India had ordered 470 jets out of which 250 were ordered from Airbus. The rest of jets were expected to be supplied by Boeing. The latest order indicates a rapid expansion plan by Air India, the PTI reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
Earlier, the airline had ordered 210 A320 neo aircraft and 40 A350 jets with an option to buy more airplanes. The airline has reportedly exercised this option to place an order for 85 more jets, the people said.
