New Delhi: The stage is all set for the crucial and much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy which begins on Friday morning with the first Test match at Perth. In absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who’s busy attending to personal commitments, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah takes charge as the captain of the side.
Ahead of the beginner, stand-in skipper Bumrah has provided a big update on seasoned pacer Mohammed Shami after the latter made his return to competitive cricket last week in Ranji Trophy. After nursing an ankle injury for the entire 2023 season, Shami finally made a special comeback where he took as many as seven wickets on his Ranji return.
Bumrah’s big update on Shami
While the veteran pacer was not added to the squad of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, there were speculations that he could be part of the team after a sensational competitive comeback. Stand-in skipper Bumrah has all but confirmed it expressing hope that the fast bowler would join the squad soon. Whether or not he will be part of the Perth Test is yet to be known but he expressed confidence saying that the management is keeping an eye on him.
During the pre-match press conference on Thursday, Bumrah was asked on an update on Shami, and the pacer stated that the team management is ‘keeping a keen eye’ on his return.
“Shami bhai has started to play cricket, and obviously, he is an integral part of this team. I’m sure the management is also keeping a keen eye (on him). Hopefully, things fall in place and you might see him here as well,” said Bumrah.
Meanwhile, after a poor show at the recently-concluded New Zealand Test series, Indian would be hoping to make an impactful performance in the opening Test and carry the same in the entire series.
