New Delhi: The Indian cricket team is all set to take part in the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) that begins on November 22, Friday, in Perth. The series is all important for India as the team looks to book its slot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, a task that has become a bit arduous after the New Zealand’s 0-3 whitewash of India.
In the coming month and a half, the Indian cricket team will play five Test matches against Australia which is a massive opportunity for the Men in Blue to reach the WTC final for the third consecutive time. For that, India need to carefully plan out their way as the five-Test series against the Aussies, that too on Australian soil, won’t be an easy job. Here’s a look at all the possible scenarios where India can book a berth in the WTC 2023-25 final –
India’s road to WTC final – All scenarios explained
1. Team India will be guaranteed a spot in the WTC final if the claim the five-match Test series against Australia 4-0 or 5-0. But… if they lost even a single game, their fate will hang on the results of the other teams.
2. If India bags the series 4-1, they will require England to draw at least one Test match against New Zealand or Pakistan/Sri Lanka to draw a game against South Africa.
3. If India wins the five-Test series 3-2, they will need England to beat New Zealand in one of the three Tests. Moreover, they will need Sri Lanka to beat Australia in at least one Test and South Africa to go down in two of their four matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
4. If the series gets tied at 2-2, the situation gets more complex for India. Then… New Zealand will have to lose one Test match against England and Sri Lanka will also have to lose one Test against South Africa. Moreover, if India want to qualify for the WTC final, Australia will have to lose both of their games against Sri Lanka.
5. If Team India manages a narrow 2-1 win against Australia, they will reach the WTC final if New Zealand draw one Test and lost one against England. Also, if Sri Lanka lose both games against South Africa and claims both matches against Australia, it will be the best scenario for the Men in Blue.
6. No true Indian cricket fan wants this to be the case but if India win only one of the five Test against Australia, their dreams of making into the WTC 2025 final will be shattered.
For Team India, all eyes are placed upon booking a slot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, specially after the 0-3 home whitewash at the hands of New Zealand.
