New Delhi: Hyderabad captain Tilak Varma on Saturday recorded the highest individual score by a player in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 season. He scored 151 runs from 67 balls against Megahalaya at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot as India’s national T20 tournament kicked off on Saturday around the nation.
After being asked to bat first, Hyderabad lost opener Rahul Singh Gahlaut in the first over for a three-ball duck t0 Akash Kumar. That’s when Tilak joined forces with Tanmay Agarwal at the crease. The pair pulverised the Meghalaya bowling attack in its 122-run alliance with the Indian international being the wrecker-in-chief.
The southpaw belted 14 boundaries and 10 sixes at an impressive strike rate of 225.37. He notched up his third three-figure score in T20 cricket after back-to-back centuries in South Africa in the four-match T20I series earlier in the month.
Tilak was dismissed on the final ball of the Hyderabad innings after holing out to Jaskirat off Dippu’s bowling. The 22-year-old became the highest individual run-scorer in SMAT, breaking Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer’s record of 147 against Sikkim in the 2019 edition.
By the virtue of his scintillating knock in Rajkot, Tilak now holds the record for the highest individual score in T20 cricket by an Indian batter. The previous record was also held by Iyer, aforementioned.
Hyderabad thrash Meghalaya by 179 runs
The blitzkrieg by Tilak and Tanmay’s determined fifty cruised Hyderabad to a mammoth 284 for 4 in the first innings. Buddhi Rahul made 30 runs off 23 balls to add further damage to an insipid bowling show by Meghalaya. In response, the Akash Kumar-led side was bowled out for a minuscule 69 in 15.1 overs.
Tilak Varma (151 off 67) becomes the first Indian man to record a 150+ score in T20s, surpassing Shreyas Iyer’s record 147 in the #SyedMushtaqAliTrophy. Only the 11th batter to record a T20 150. Falls off the last ball of the innings. Sensational run.

G Anikethreddy (4 for 11) and Tanay Thyagarajan (3 for 15) bowled marvelously to cut short Meghalaya’s innings. Opener Arpit Subhas was the top run-scorer for the team with 27 off 23 balls. Nine Meghalaya players mustered single digit scores in a poor display of batting.
