New Delhi: Team India star KL Rahul triggered a bidding war between the likes of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction on Sunday, November 24. Rahul was eventually sold to Delhi Capitals for a sum of Rs 14 crore. Rahul was expected to breach the Rs 20 crore mark but it wasn’t meant to be.
Rahul will now replace Rishabh Pant at Delhi Capitals. Pant was released by DC ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction after failed negotiations between the two parties. Pant went on to script history at the auction as he became the most expensive player in IPL history after being bought by Lucknow Super Giants for a whopping Rs 27 crore.
Rahul, who was roped in as one of their marquee players by LSG ahead of their IPL debut in 2022, led the franchise in all three seasons before being released ahead of the ongoing mega auction. LSG qualified for back-to-back playoffs under Rahul’s captaincy but ended up missing out on a spot in the top four last season.
There were concerns over Rahul’s strike rate in IPL 2024 which led to LSG letting the star India batter go. Interestingly, it was a straight swap for Rahul and Pant, who went to Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants, respectively at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Rahul has been a consistent performer with the bat over the years in the IPL and also comes with significant experience behind his back as captain. The Indian batter has so far amassed 4683 runs in 132 matches in his IPL career at an average of over 45 and a strike rate of 134.61, including 4 centuries and 37 fifties.
