New Delhi: Every year on November 26, Constitution Day, also known as the ‘National Law Day’ and the ‘Samvidhan Divas’, is celebrated in India. The day commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of India. On November 26, 1949, the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India. The Constitution of India came into effect on January 26, 1950. The Constitution Assembly played an important role in framing the Constitution of India and in that Assembly, KM Munshi was an important member.
KM Munshi and the days of freedom struggle
Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi or KM Munshi, popularly known by his pen name Ghanshyam Vyas, was a freedom fighter, politician and writer from Gujarat. He was a lawyer by profession and later became an author and politician.
Born on December 30, 1887, at Bharuch, a town in Gujarat of British India, Munshi was heavily influenced by famous revolutionary Aurobindo Ghosh. He took part in a revolutionary group and even involved himself in making bombs. Later, he settled in Mumbai and joined the Indian Home Rule movement. In 1920, he took part in the annual Congress session at Ahmedabad and its president Surendranath Banerjee influenced him.
Munshi was later influenced by Gandhi and took part in the Civil Disobedience Movement. He was imprisoned for six months and was arrested again for taking part in the movement and was jailed for two years. In 1973, he became Bombay Presidency’s Home Minister and tried to suppress the communal riots in the city. In 1940, he took part in Individual satyagraha and was again arrested.
KM Munshi after India got Independence
After India gained Independence, KM Munshi served in many committees including the Advisory Committee, Sub-Committee on Fundamental Rights and Drafting Committee. He prepared drafts on Fundamental Rights. He visited the Junagadh State along with Sardar Patel and N. V. Gadgil, incorporated it into India and played a key role in the reconstruction of the Somnath temple.
Munshi was a diplomatic envoy to the princely state of Hyderabad and served on the ad hoc Flag Committee which selected India’s Flag. Importantly, Munshi was on the Constituent Assembly which drafted the Indian Constitution under B. R. Ambedkar’s chairmanship.
Munshi was also a prolific author in Gujarati and English with the pen name Ghanshyam Vyas. He is considered one of the greatest literary figures in Gujarati. His famous historical novels in Gujarati include Gujarat-no-Nath, Rajadhiraj and Patan-ni-Prabhuta and also wrote Krishnavatara, Jay Somnath, Bhagavan Parasurama and Tapasvini. He also wrote several notable works in English.
