New Delhi: Leicester City parted ways with manager Steve Cooper following a poor start to the season but are keen to appoint a replacement swiftly. The club were linked with multiple names following the announcement with former Premier League managers like David Moyes, Graham Potter, and Ruud van Nistelrooy all in contention for the role. Former Leicester manager, Nigel Pearson is also keen to make a return to the Foxes.
However, it has now been revealed that one of the aforementioned names has emerged as a leading candidate for the role. Former Manchester United interim manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy, who beat the Foxes twice in his short spell in charge of the Red Devils, is the name emerging as the hot favourite to be Steve Cooper’s successor at the club. Former West Brom manager Carlos Corberan is another name being appreciated by the club.

The report from English publication Givemesport claims that these are the two leading candidates for the role while England U21 manager and outgoing first team manager, Lee Carsley, is another name that is being considered. The search for Cooper’s successor is being led by owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha alongside the director of football John Rudkin. The club are keen to get a replacement in before their trip to Brentford this coming weekend.

The 48-year-old Manchester United legend was recently in charge of the club for four games and managed to remain unbeaten in his short spell as manager of the Red Devils. He dismantled the Foxes by an aggregate score of 8-2 across two games while in charge of United and according to Givemesport, the Midlands club were impressed by the Dutchman’s gameplan in such a short span.
The Foxes are understood to be on the lookout for a manager who can create an instant bond with both the fans and the players, something that Cooper failed to do. Cooper was never the first choice replacement for Enzo Maresca and seemed to be an uninspiring choice for being the manager of a former Premier League champion. Nistelrooy fits the bill when it comes to this criterion as he created a memorable bond with the Manchester United fans and players and none of them wanted the Dutchman to leave Old Trafford.
Sources at the King Power Stadium suggest that Nistelrooy could bring a similar positive influence as former manager Enzo Maresca, who was highly regarded by the squad. The 48-year-old ex-PSV Eindhoven coach is reportedly eager to take on a Premier League role and is undeterred by the challenge of helping Leicester City retain their top-flight status. Meanwhile, Carlos Corberán, a candidate for the position last summer, remains in contention. He was seen as a strong stylistic match capable of building on Maresca’s system. According to GMS sources, Corberán is interested in the job and would be willing to leave West Brom mid-season if offered the opportunity.
