Leicester City appoint former Dutch international Ruud van Nistelrooy as new manager

New Delhi: Ruud van Nistelrooy takes over as Leicester City’s new manager. Van Nistelrooy will succeed Steve Cooper, who was terminated from the role after a 2-1 defeat against Chelsea last weekend. The 48-year-old won’t be taking charge of the Foxes when they face Brentford but will most likely be at the helm for West Ham United’s visit to King Power Stadium.

Earlier in the week, Cooper and some of his staff were terminated immediately after leading the side for only 12 games. First-team coach Ben Dawson was given charge of the side as an interim manager. Nistelrroy has now signed a contract until 2027 with the club.

The Dutchman was quoted as being “Proud and excited” to join Leicester City and looked forward to working with the people around the club. Van Nistelrooy further noted that the club’s recent performances had been interesting and hoped to make everyone who supported the club proud.

Van Nistelrooy’s recent assignment saw him as the interim manager of Manchester United for four games after Erik ten Hag’s termination. He joined his staff at the start of this season and was unbeaten as the interim boss, with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea and two wins against Leicester City.

However, United’s new head coach decided against retaining Van Nistelrooy’s services at Old Trafford. Before that, his only experience in senior management was with PSV Eindhoven, leading them to the second spot in the 2022-23 Eredivisie before leaving the club, citing a lack of support from the top hierarchy of the club.

Leicester City’s vacancy had other contenders which included David Moyes and former Brighton and Hove Albion coach Graham Potter. However, the club decided to go ahead with Van Nistelrooy, coming to the club at no compensation cost requirement which was a big point in favour of the former United star due to the Profit and Sustainability Rules. Earlier, there were rumours of Van Nisterooy replacing Vincent Kompany at Burnley, but he had instead chosen to join Ten Hag’s staff.
