New Delhi: South Africa crushed Sri Lanka by 233 runs on the fourth day of the first Test match at Kingsmead, Durban, on Saturday, November 30. While chasing a mammoth total of 516, Sri Lanka skittled for 282 in the second innings thanks to left-arm pacer Marco Jansen’s prolific spell of 11 for 86 across two innings.
Sri Lanka resumed the day at 103 for 5 with senior man Dinesh Chandimal and skipper Dhananjaya de Silva resuming the day for the visitors. The duo showed resolute in the first session, adopting a compact defence while ticking the scoreboard with Chandimal bringing his immensely lived experience into the fore, plundering 12 boundaries.
Both batters crossed half-centuries and were cruising for a remarkable turnaround before Keshav Maharaj got the breakthrough for the Proteas. The left-arm spinner got De Silva got caught by Tristan Stubbs at mid-wicket, apparently a soft dismissal with the Sri Lankan skipper recklessly chipping the ball.
Chandimal forged another valuable partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis, the pair adding 75 runs for the seventh wicket. South Africa pacer Gerald Coetzee ended this stand by plucking a return catch of Chandimal, leaving the tourists to follow a slump.
