Giving Tuesday 2024: Date, History & Global Impact

New Delhi: Charity is the best thing one can do for those who are in need. And if you think about when to do it, today is a better day to make donations. Today is Giving Tuesday, which is observed on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

In this article, let us explore when this year’s Giving Tuesday is, its history, and the impact it has made.

Giving Tuesday 2024: Date and Significance

Giving Tuesday 2024 will be Tuesday, December 3. Each year, it is observed on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Since Thanksgiving is the fourth week of November, it can fall on either the last Tuesday of November or the first Tuesday of December.

Outside of awareness days and significant events, getting attention for nonprofit causes can be hard.

Giving Tuesday offers nonprofits a great chance to connect with people. Many members of the public are aware of this day and often save money to donate. This makes it an excellent time for nonprofits to showcase their work, ask for donations, and attract new supporters. Nonprofits that want to increase their visibility should definitely take part.

Depending on their resources, nonprofits can participate in simple ways. One simple way is to share a social media post or send an email newsletter.

The History and Origins of #GivingTuesday

GivingTuesday, often called #GivingTuesday, is a global day dedicated to giving. It started in 2012 in New York and was created by Henry Timms at 92nd Street Y. The United Nations Foundation helped co-found the event with support from BLK SHP (Black Sheep).

This initiative aims to shift focus from events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday to charitable actions, such as local clothing drives and donations for anti-hunger programmes worldwide.

Asha Curran, 92Y’s chief innovation officer, and Henry Timms, its executive director, travelled across the country to promote Giving Tuesday.

In 2019, Giving Tuesday became its own organisation, GivingTuesday, with Curran as the CEO. According to its website, the organisation’s mission is to create a world where generosity is central to society, promoting dignity, opportunity, and equity around the globe.

Global Impact of Giving Tuesday

In its first year, over 2,500 nonprofit organisations joined Giving Tuesday and raised about $12 million. Since then, the movement has grown significantly. It is now a global event, with more than 100 countries participating in their own national Giving Tuesday campaigns.

Giving Tuesday, observed annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is a global generosity movement encouraging charitable giving. Originating in 2012, it counterbalances Black Friday and Cyber Monday’s consumerism.   knowledge Knowledge News, Photos and Videos on General Knowledge
