New Delhi: Top Indian para-athletes such as Ashok Kumar Malik, Simran Sharma and Navdeep have expressed their gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government on the occasion of World Disability Day. World Disability Day is celebrated every year on December 3 to promote the rights of the persons with disabilities and also celebrate the success they have achieved in varied disciplines around the globe.
The Indian para-athletes thanked the government for building infrastructure for their convenience and providing them with opportunities which enabled them to achieve growth and success at various national and international levels. The Indian para-athletes have being doing wonders recently at massive sporting events like the Paralympics. India gained a record haul of 29 medals at the 2024 Paris Games.
We have proper accessibility at airports: Navdeep
A gold medallist at the Paris Paralympics in javelin throw F41 event, Navdeep said that as para-athletes, they have to take part in many domestic and international completions and for that proper accessibility in airports during travel is crucial, which they have not only in India but internationally as well. Currently, 35 international airports and 55 domestic airports have features like ramps, accessible toilets, and Braille-enabled lifts.
Apart from him, powerlifter Ashok Kumar, who represented the country at Paris Paralympics, highlighted how accessibility initiatives have proven to be game changers. The Indian government has facilitated over 50000 buses for the domestic travel which are available across all the 24 states and UTs. Apart from these two, Simran Sharma, who bagged a bronze medal in 200m T12 event at the Paris Paralympics, said that the government has done their bit to help people with low visibility.
“I am elated that a total of 672 state government websites and 95 central government websites have been made compliant with accessibility standards for people like us who have low visibility,” said Simran.
