BCCI vs PCB: Hybrid Model or No Champions Trophy? 2025 Host Uncertainty

New Delhi: The ongoing tussle between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has only delayed the official announcement of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, for which the uncertainty looms as the International Cricket Council is yet to find a resolution over the quadrennial event’s hosting.

The ICC Champions Trophy is expected to return after eight years in the February-March window next year (2025). Pakistan, the defending champions, were awarded the hosting rights in 2021, but the BCCI refused to send the Indian men’s team across the border for the competition after consultation with the Indian government.

The Indian cricket board has cleared its stance that they will be open to play in a hybrid model, wherein Indian matches will be held in a neutral venue (possibly UAE). However, the PCB has been adamant to host the tournament solely in Pakistan.

In the recent development, PCB made a condition to host the Champions Trophy in hybrid model if the ICC allows Pakistan to adopt the same model when India hosts ICC events in following years to come, as reports have suggested.

There has been no meeting being able to take place after it was planned by the ICC to reconvene the meeting for the Champions Trophy hosting rights on November 29. The development is yet to be awaited with a report from Cricbuzz suggesting that a meeting could be possible after December 5, when BCCI secretary Jay Shah assumes the ICC chairman office when the Dubai headquarters reopens since it has been closed from Sunday (December 1) onwards.

Will BCCI accept Pakistan’s condition?

The BCCI hasn’t cleared its stance whether to agree to Pakistan’s condition or not. The Cricbuzz report has indicated that the Indian board will once again consult the Indian government before making its decision before the ICC.

India will host the ICC Women’s World Cup (ODI) next year, ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026, apart from hosting the Asia Cup (T20 format) next year (which falls under Asian Cricket Council’s matter).
