New Delhi: It was not easy to carve out a legacy for himself when Rabindranath Tagore, the famous poet and Nobel Laureate was the uncle, but Abanindranath Tagore did exactly that. The influential family of Abanindranath Tagore
Born on August 7, 1871, in Kolkata’s Jorasanko, Abanindranath belonged to the famous Tagore family of Bengal. His grandfather was Dwarkanath Tagore’s second son and Abanindranath was a nephew of Rabindranath Tagore. His elder brother, Gaganendranath Tagore, was also an artist. In the 1880s, while studying at the then Sanskrit College, Abanindranath learned about art.
The painting career of Abanindranath Tagore
In the early 1890s, many of the illustrations of Abanindranath Tagore were published in magazines and Rabindranath Tagore’s works. He showed a particular interest in watercolour and developed an interest in Mughal art. Many of his works are based on Krishna’s life in a style influenced by the Mughals. Tagore favoured and followed traditional Indian painting techniques.
In 1930, he painted the Arabian Nights series where he uses the stories to look at colonial Calcutta. Among his close students were Nandalal Bose, Kshitindranath Majumdar, Samarendranath Gupta, Asit Kumar Haldar, Surendranath Ganguly, Kalipada Ghoshal, Mukul Dey, and K. Venkatappa. In 1942, he became the chancellor of Visva Bharati. As an author, his books Buro Angla, Rajkahini, Khirer Putul and Nalak were some of the major works in Bengali language children’s literature and art. As an artist, Tagore was so successful that it was hailed as a national Indian style within British art institutions. He passed away on December 5, 1951, at the age of 80.
