Fans divided as Rohit Sharma falls cheaply after demoting himself to the middle-order

New Delhi: Rohit Sharma endured a forgettable return to the Indian cricket team on the opening day of the second Test between India and Australia at the Adelaide Oval. Rohit, who missed the first Test in Perth due to paternal duties, returned to lead the side in the pink-ball Test, which began today (Friday, December 6) in Adelaide.

Rohit, India’s regular opener, decided to demote himself to the middle order and sacrificed his opening slot for the greater good. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul starred with a 201-run partnership in the Perth Test and Rohit didn’t want to disturb the in-form opening combo.

Rohit Sharma falls cheaply

Opting to bat first, Rohit came out to bat at a difficult time when India were under the pump after losing three quick wickets, including Virat Kohli and a well-set pair of KL Rahul and Shubman Gill. Coming to bat at No.6 after the fall of Gill’s wicket, Rohit safely negotiated the tricky period before the Tea break. However, he failed to get going during his 23-ball stay and was dismissed by Scott Boland for just 3 runs early in the second session.

His dismissal sparked a massive debate on social media as fans were left divided over his failure. While some fans slammed the Indian skipper for failing in both the top and middle order, some defended him pointing out his selfless act of demoting himself for the sake of the team.

You can’t troll Rohit Sharma for this, he was forced to change his batting order. His natural game comes as an opener. Give him sometime he will be scoring in middle order as well. pic.twitter.com/bJDS2J0lx2

What a selfless captain Rohit Sharma is! He didn’t even take the review, he took one for the team. There are very few selfless leaders like him in world cricket. This Indian team doesn’t deserve Rohit Sharma 🇮🇳💔💔#AUSvIND #tapmad #DontStopStreaming #CatchEveryMatch pic.twitter.com/5HKihYUSgr

Rohit’s dismal run in Tests continues

Rohit’s horror run in Test cricket continued with another failure in the long format. After a horrendous outing against New Zealand in the home Test series, Rohit would have hoped for a reversal in his fortunes in different conditions, against a different opponent and at a different batting order. However, neither of the changes helped him recover from his slump in form.

Rohit has scored just 136 runs in his last 11 Test innings at a dismal average of 12.36. He still has plenty of time to arrest the slide. After all, form is temporary and class is permanent.
