New Delhi: The opening day of the first Test match between India and Australia witnessed a rare disruption as the stadium floodlights at the Adelaide Oval went off couple of times causing a blackout. It did not only happen once but twice as spectators in the stands were forced to switch on their mobile phone flashlights.
Cricket Australia later issued a clarification statement saying that the floodlight failure at the stadium occurred due to an internal switching issue. The floodlight failure happened for the first time during the 18th over of Australia’s innings and it lasted for merely 28 seconds. A while later, a similar incident happened again causing a slightly longer delay of 86 seconds.
Bizarre scene at Adelaide, CA clarifies
The players, spectators and the commentators were surprised seeing the bizarre scene take place at the iconic stadium but the Australian cricket body clarified the reason. According to a report in Sydney Morning Herald, Australia had place a request of activating the net lights for an evening training session. However, some mix-up happened in the control room at the top of the Western Stand and because of that, the stadium’s four main light towers were accidentally switched off.
“We had a brief internal switching issue that was quickly identified and rectified. They went out to turn on the net lights so the night watchman could have a couple of throwdowns, and somehow either turned them to the wrong thing or something tripped,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Australia ended the opening day on top as after a remarkable show with the ball from Mitchell Starc, batters stood tall for the hosts as Australia lost just a wicket when stumps were called. Indian started off the second day on a good note picking up few wickets in the first session but then lethal batter Travis Head unleashed his beast mode with a powerful century to put the Aussies in command.
