New Delhi: Virat Kohli’s dream run at the Adelaide Oval in Tests came to a shattering end on Saturday after the Team India star recorded twin failures in the ongoing 2nd Test against Australia at the iconic venue. Kohli failed to continue his fine form in the pink-ball Test as he was dismissed cheaply in India’s both innings of the match.
The expectations were high from Kohli heading into the pink-ball encounter between India and Australia in Adelaide considering his terrific record at the venue and his sublime ton in the last game in Perth. However, Kohli struggled to continue his love affair with Adelaide and flopped with the bat as Australia dominated the proceedings on both days of the Test match.
Kohli, who was dismissed on 7 in India’s first innings, was sent packing by Scott Boland on 11 off 21 balls in the visitors’ second innings on Saturday. Kohli did well at the start of his innings as he left a few balls outside off stump and looked disciplined. However, he ended up edging one off Boland’s bowling to wicket-keeper Alex Carey, who completed the catch.
Kohli finished the pink-ball Test with 18 runs from two innings combined, his lowest tally in a Test match at the Adelaide Oval in his career so far. The India batter had an impressive 509 runs to his name in just 4 Test matches with the highest score of 141 at the Adelaide Oval before the ongoing 2nd Test against Australia. However, Kohli failed to replicate his heroics this time around.
India under pressure in 2nd Test against Australia
India are under intense pressure in the ongoing pink-ball Test in Adelaide after suffering yet another batting collapse in their second innings. Chasing Australia’s strong lead of 157 runs in their second innings, India got off to a poor start as they lost their openers KL Rahul (7) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (24) cheaply before Kohli was sent packing.
Pat Cummins removed Rahul to draw the first blood for Australia before Scot Boland dismissed both Jaiswal and Kohli. Shubman Gill looked in decent touch but was left bamboozled by Mitchell Starc, who broke his middle stump with an absolute ripper to send him back on 28. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma too failed to contribute and was dismissed cheaply on 6 by Cummins.
After the top-order collapse, Rishabh Pant (28*) combined with Nitish Reddy (15*) to share an unbeaten 23-run stand for the 6th wicket to help India head to stumps at 128/5, trailing Australia by 29 runs heading into Day 3.
