Mohamed Salah’s Anfield stay in focus as Liverpool make opening contract offer

New Delhi: Liverpool have made their opening offer to Mohamed Salah in order to retain the Egyptian star beyond the season. His term, along with Virgil van Dijk, ends at the end of this season. According to media outlet The Athletic, sources note that new deals have been placed. However, there is no word if the agreement has been confirmed, though the atmosphere in Anfield is that both the players would be staying back.

It is believed that negotiations may take time, which might not be the most suitable scenario for the Reds, with Salah, Van Dijk and academy graduate Trent Alexander-Arnold attracting attention from other clubs and could sign a pre-contract agreement with them from January 1st.

It is understood that all three have received proposals from the club and that further negotiations will continue. Earlier, Salah expressed his frustration at the situation of the deal not progressing, and there was no word from Liverpool about extending his stay at the club. Salah further said that he wished to have clarity on the club’s stance and the length of extension Liverpool would be offering.

Mohamed Salah’s performance this season

After playing a key role in helping Liverpool beat Southampton last month, Salah had noted that his stay was less likely and was disappointed that there had been an offer made to him. The disappointment isn’t undue, having played well throughout the season, having 21 goal involvements in the Premier League, and having 15 goals coming off his boot across the competition. In the last midweek’s fixture, a brace against Newcastle United helped Liverpool to retain the top spot in the Premier League table as well as make a 3-3 draw.

Salah’s goal and assist helped him break Wayne Rooney’s long-standing record for most matches with a goal and assist, with Salah now having 37 matches of such a feat.  Since joining Liverpool in 2017 from Serie A side Roma, Salah has made 370 appearances for the club, scoring 226 times. After a stint with Chelsea in the Premier League between 2014 and 2016, Salah’s stay at Liverpool has been successful. He has won the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, League Cup and FA Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

Liverpool have been very successful this season under new manager Arne Slot, topping the Premier League with just one defeat in the competition and are four points clear of Chelsea at the moment, despite the Merseyside derby getting cancelled due to unfavourable weather conditions at the weekend.

They have secured five wins in as many matches in the UEFA Champions League, with Salah scoring once and making four assists in the tournament. They are now set to play Girona on Tuesday.

Mohamed Salah has reportedly been made an offer by Liverpool to extend his stay at the club as his contract nears end.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
