Sanjay Malhotra to head RBI: Know about your new RBI Governor

New Delhi: Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra has been appointed as the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet gave the green signal to Malhotra, who will head the coveted chair for three years, starting December 11, 2024.

Sanjay Malhotra will replace Shaktikanta Das, whose tenure as RBI Governor ends on December 10, 2024. The new appointee is a 1990 Batch Rajasthan Cadre IAS Officer.

Malhotra’s Extensive Experience in Finance and Government

Malhotra will serve as the 26th RBI Governor. He did his graduation in computer science from India’s premier engineering institute – Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur. He completed his Master’s in Public Policy from Princeton University in the United States.

The new RBI Governor has a vast experience of over 33 years in working in several sectors, taxation, mines, power, finance and information technology and others. Currently, Malhotra is the Secretary (Revenue) in the Union Finance Ministry.

Malhotra served as the Secretary in the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance. In his over three decades of experience, he worked in both state and the central government and handled world related to finance and taxation. His present assignment requird him to plays an important role in tax policy formulation in respect of direct and indirect taxes.

Shaktikanta Das was appointed as the RBI Governor on December 12, 2018, after the abrupt exit of Urjit Patel. The government extended Das’ tenure after he completed three-year terms in office. His extended tenure ends on 10th December.

The outgoing RBI governor took charge when the market was shaken by the surprsing resignation of Urijit Patel amid a tussle between the RBI and the government over the issue of surplus transfer.
