Explained! Why Mohammed Siraj was handed heavier penalty than Travis Head by ICC

New Delhi: Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head were both sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday for their heated verbal spat on Day 2 of the recently concluded 2nd Test between India and Australia in Adelaide. While Siraj was fined 20% of his match fee, Head escaped any financial penalty from the ICC.

Both players were found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct as the incident involving the duo garnered headlines. Siraj had given a fiery send-off to Head after dismissing the Australian batter on 140. Head was spotted hurling abuse at Siraj as he walked off the pitch.

Why Mohammed Siraj was handed heavier penalty by ICC

While Siraj was fined 20% of his match fee by the ICC, there was no fine for Head. The reason behind the decision was the fact that Siraj was found guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct which relates to actions or language used to provoke an aggressive response from a batter upon his dismissal.

Meanwhile, Head was charged for breaching Article 2.13 of the Code of Conduct which relates to abusive language used by a player during an international match. Head escaped a fine as the violation didn’t have a financial penalty. Meanwhile, both players were handed one demerit point each and accepted their punishments in a disciplinary hearing on December 09.

“Both admitted their offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle,” ICC said in its statement.

What happened between Siraj and Head on Day 2 of Adelaide Test

It all started after Siraj cleaned Head on 140 with a low full toss to bring an end to his brilliant knock at his home ground. Siraj celebrated the dismissal aggressively, triggering a verbal exchange as the duo hurled a mouthful at each other. Head was seen hurling a mouthful at the Indian pacer, who was later also booed by the home crowd in Adelaide.

In the post-match interview, Head claimed he only said ‘well-bowled’ to Siraj and was disappointed to see the Indian pacer reacting the way he did. However, Siraj called out Head’s lie as he shared his version of the story. Siraj revealed Head hurled abuse at him which prompted an aggressive reaction from his side. The duo later sorted their differences after the conclusion of the game.
