New Delhi: The year’s final UEFA Champions League has been played, with just two game weeks remaining in the league stage. Liverpool have dominated the tournament and are at the top of the table after winning six out of six games. Inter Milan’s first loss in the Champions League means they are now in the sixth place, with Barcelona now rising to the second place in the table.
Leverkusen’s win against Inter means they are now in fourth place, behind Arsenal, and above Aston Villa. Stade Brest and Lillie occupy the rest of the top eight places. The tournament is still open, with Liverpool as the only team who have secured a place in the final 16.
Amidst the big teams, it is Manchester City who are staring at elimination after a series of poor performance in the tournament. Defending Champions, Real Madrid have kept the hopes alive as they are now placed on the 20th place. PSG are still on 25th place, at the top of the elimination zone.
The new format of the Champions League puts the top-eight finishes for direct qualification to the knockout stage, while the teams from ninth to 24th play a two legged knockout play-offs. Teams between ninth and 16th play a seeded competition, with a team from 17tha and 24th and get the upper-hand of playing the second of the qualifier at home.
The rest of the 12 teams are eliminated but unlike previous years, these teams won’t be relegated to another European competition like the Europa Cup. According to Opta, five wins and one draw, which is 16 points, gives you the best percentage of qualifying in the top eight. Taking 10 points gives you better chance of qualifying in the top 24.
