Mohammad al-Bashir: Meet the new caretaker PM of Syria after the fall of Assad regime

New Delhi: Syria has been going through a chaotic phase for a long time, first due to its civil war and now due to apparent political instability. The rebels have brought the reign of former President Bashar al-Assad to an end and the latter has fled the country. Mohammad al-Bashir has been announced as the new caretaker Prime Minister of Syria until March 1 and he faces the humungous task of leading a country which was embroiled in war for the last 14 years. According to reports, Bashir has pledged to protect minority rights and also called on Syrian refugees to return home.

Mohammed al-Bashir: Meet the caretaker Prime Minister of Syria

An engineer-turned-politician, Mohammed al-Bashir is Syria’s 70th Prime Minister and is heading the Syrian Transitional Government since December 10, 2024. After the end of the rule of the Assad family, Bashir became the PM and succeeded Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali. Also, he served as the 5th Prime Minister of the Syrian Salvation Government.

Born in 1983, al-Bashir has a degree in electrical engineering. He worked as an engineer and became the Precision Instruments Department’s head at the Syrian Gas Company’s gas plant. After the civil war started in Syria, he worked at an institute which provided education to children whom the war had affected.

Mohammed al-Bashir and his political journey

For two and a half years, Mohammed al-Bashir was Islamic Education’s Director at the Ministry of Awqaf of the Salvation Government. Later, he became the Director of Association Affairs at the Ministry of Development and Humanitarian Affairs. He served as the Minister of Development and Humanitarian Affairs between 2022 and 2023 in the Ali Keda cabinet.

On January 13, 2024, he was elected the Prime Minister of Syria by the Salvation Government’s Shura Council and he brought down real estate fees, launched consultations for expanding the zoning plan of Idlib city and relaxed planning regulations. He granted amnesty to prisoners who were not convicted of serious crimes. In late November this year, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and others attacked northwestern Syria and captured Aleppo. The rebels eventually defeated the forces of Assad and brought an end to his regime and five decades of family rule.

As Syria erupted in joy after the fall of the Assam regime, on December 9, 2024, al-Bashir was entrusted with the task of forming a transitional government. On December 10, he was officially appointed as the Prime Minister of Syria’s transitional government until March 1, 2025.
