New Delhi: The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 auction is scheduled to take place on Sunday (December 15) in Bengaluru for the third season of India’s premier franchise tournament for women cricketers. A total of 71 players, including 25 overseas players, were retained by all five teams during the retention window on November 7.
Only 19 slots can be filled during the auction, which includes 14 for Indian players and remaining five for the overseas players. Barring UP Warriorz (only three slots remaining), four teams are left with four slots to fill in their teams.
Gujarat Giants (GG) is the only team which can accommodate two overseas players in their squad while Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) can’t pick any overseas players in the auction. Here we take a look at what type of specialised players teams can target in the auction.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru
The defending WPL champions have retained their core squad that helped them to lift the silverware. RCB will need add a frontline seamer to pair up with Renuka Singh Thakur as the team is boasted with its spin attack powered by the Australian duo of Sophie Molineux and Georgia Wareham.
Remaining slots: 4 Purse: INR 3.25 crore
Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals can look for a power-hitting option given that the players they have retained are good in building the innings. Marizanne Kapp is an option but then she needs to manage the middle-order in case there is an early batting collapse.
Remaining slots: 4 Purse: INR 2.5 crore
Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians need boost in their lower-middle order as they rely enough on their top five batters. With Yastika Bhatia likely to miss with her recent injury scare news, the team should be looking on for a backup wicketkeeper. An overseas bowling all-rounder can also be on the cards with the release of England player Issy Wong.
Remaining slots: 4 Purse: INR 2.65 crore
Gujarat Giants
Gujarat Giants will need an additional all-rounder to strengthen the batting order after Sneh Rana was released. A fast bowling option is something they have missed in their ranks and this could be the time.
Remaining slots: 4 Purse: INR 4.4 crore
UP Warriorz
UP Warriorz can rope in a swashbuckling finisher in their team and add some quality spinners given they rely on Sophie Ecclestone and Deepti Sharma in the middle overs. They will need Indian batters to ensure that they don’t depend enough on overseas players.
Remaining slots: 3 Purse: INR 3.9 crore
