New Delhi: Being the leader of India’s bowling unit, it is his duty to guide his junior colleagues in India’s bowling attack, says Jasprit Bumrah, refusing to point fingers at anyone for inability to provide him support in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Test series.
Bumrah has been India’s standout bowler in the series with 18 wickets but the other have not quite pulled their weight. It has led to India depending singularly on Bumrah for wickets while Australia have milked runs at the other end.
After India’s defeat at Adelaide in the second Test following their win in Perth, skipper Rohit Sharma also addressed the issue, saying that others need to step up as it isn’t possible for Bumrah to bowl from both ends.
In the third Test at Gabba, India conceded a big first-innings total of 445 despite Bumrah’s 6/76 and then were reduced to 51/4 on the rain-hit third day.
Amid questions being raised of India’s bowling quality and batting technique, Bumrah said it’s time to rally around each other and play as a unit.
Rallying cry
“We don’t, as a team, point fingers at each other and we don’t want to get into that mindset where we are pointing fingers at each other that ‘you should do this, you should do that’,” Bumrah said at stumps on the third day.
“We, as a team, are going through a transition, new players are coming here and it’s not the easiest place to play cricket. Over here, it’s a different atmosphere with this wicket being a different challenge so yeah, we are not looking at that.”
Bumrah is the leading wicket taker in the series so far, and said it’s his responsibility to guide the younger pacers of his team like Nitish Reddy and Akash Deep, who are playing in Australia for the first time
“As a bowling unit, as I said, we are in transition so it’s my job to help the others. I have played a little more than them so I am trying to help them,” he said.
