New Delhi: Youngest world chess champion D Gukesh arrived to heroes welcome in Chennai on Monday as hundreds of people, including the media fraternity, were present at the spot to greet the newest superstar. Gukesh created history last week when he became the youngest world chess champion beating Chinese ace Ding Liren in an exciting final match Singapore.
Gukesh was excellent all through the 14 games but he showcased his best skills and temperament during the final contest, which gave him his third victory and also earned him the title. With the world championship title, Gukesh pocketed big bucks which made him a multi-millionaire as winning each game in the Championship was worth Rs 1.69 crore.
Gukesh takes more than 5 crore home
In the total 14 games, Gukesh won three matches and approximately took home Rs 5.07 crore. Additionally, the prize money of Rs 12.7 crore approximately will be equally divided between Gukesh and Liren. In total, the ace Indian chess player will take home Rs 11.34 crore approx and according to the Indian tax system, income tax of 30 per cent is charged on an annual income of more than Rs 15 lakh. In addition, for earning more than Rs 5 crore, individuals will have to pay additional surcharge of 37 per cent.
The surcharge will be combined with 4 per cent health and education levy which amounts to almost 42 per cent tax for the Indian chess player. Keeping in mind the total income of Rs 11.34 crore and a tax of 42 per cent on it, Gukesh will end up paying more tax than MS Dhoni’s IPL salary which is Rs 4 crore. Apart from this, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also announced a reward of Rs 5 crore to honour Gukesh’s miraculous achievement on the global stage. The reward amount might also be subject to a tax deduction.
