Sobhita Dhulipala’s Sabyasachi red lehenga: A Bohemian homage to archival fashion

New Delhi: Dressed elegantly in traditional jewellery and a Kanjeevaram sari, Sobhita Dhulipala embraced her Telugu heritage on her wedding day (4 December 2024). For a pre-wedding event, she chose an archival outfit as a heartfelt nod to her backpacking days, a period that she says has shaped her core identity.

In an Instagram post, Sobhita shared: “Pictures from a blurry night in Vizag (We called it Young People’s Party / YPP. Lol). A Banjara-themed homage to my backpacking days that have shaped the very core of who I am. Archival Sabya for the bohemian soul. I felt seen. Beheld.”

The Rise of Archival Fashion in 2024

Archival fashion has taken centre stage in 2024, shifting the focus from fresh-off-the-runway pieces to timeless designs. In the past, elite fashion revolved around showcasing outfits months before they became publicly available. However, the modern trend celebrates rare, vintage garments that carry history and artistry.

The Met Gala exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, highlighted this shift, showcasing iconic looks from the past. From Zendaya’s Givenchy Spring/Summer 1996 couture by Galliano to Kendall Jenner’s vintage Givenchy ensemble, archival fashion stole the spotlight. Supermodel Bella Hadid has also embraced this movement, turning heads with her stunning vintage-inspired looks.

Sobhita Shulipala’s rare archival Sabyasachi lehenga

For her pre-wedding event in Vizag, Sobhita Dhulipala wore a red lehenga designed by Sabyasachi. The skirt featured intricate details, including aged zardosi work and hand-painted mirror borders that added a touch of classic sophistication. Paired with a beautifully handwoven dupatta, the ensemble was elevated further by Sabyasachi’s signature Kanthi blouse, which is known for its elegant design and structured fit.

Her outfit, inspired by her bohemian soul, was a perfect nod to her backpacking days. The bold choice to blend archival fashion with a Banjara-themed homage showcased not just her love for vintage artistry but also her deep personal connection to the ensemble.

Heritage Jewellery and Exquisite Accessories

To complement her outfit, Sobhita selected a traditional parandi and adorned herself with 22k gold The East of Bengal Chandbalis from Sabyasachi Heritage Jewellery. She completed her look with beautifully handcrafted bellies, which showcased both craftsmanship and elegance.

The standout element of her ensemble was the chotu lehenga—a playful reinterpretation of the traditional lehenga. Falling above the ankles or mid-calf, this shorter length offered a modern, functional twist while retaining vintage charm and class.
