New Delhi: Smriti Mandhana is on the verge of making a massive record in Women’s T20 internationals when Team India will face West Indies in the final match of the series at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Thursday, December 19. The opening batter is on the cusp of making the record for most runs in Women’s T20Is in a calendar year.
She recently moved to the second spot in the ICC Women’s ODI Rankings while she went to third position in the T20I rankings. Mandhana scored a stunning century against Australia in the final ODI in Perth and backed it up with brilliant performances against West Indies in the first two fixtures of the ongoing three-match T20I series.
She scored 54 runs off 33 balls with the help of seven boundaries and two maximums while in the second T20I, she amassed 62 runs off 41 balls, her explosive knock was laced with nine boundaries and one maximum.
Most runs in a calendar year in Women’s T20Is
Currently, Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu holds the record for scoring the most runs in a calendar year in women’s T20I. She has scored 720 runs this year at an average of 40, including two centuries. Indian vice-captain Mandhana is just 34 runs short of achieving the milestone. She has scored 686 runs at an average of 40.35 with seven half-centuries in 22 T20I matches.
UAE’s Esha Oza scored 711 runs in 2024 while West Indies captain Hayley Mathews amassed 700 runs in 2023. UAE’s Kavisha Egodage also feature in the list, scoring 675 runs in 25 matches. Earlier, Mandhana also broke the record for scoring most fifties in the Women’s T20Is.
