India set to undergo major transition as more senior players to retire soon – Report

New Delhi: Seasoned Indian player Ravichandran Ashwin bid adieu to cricket on the final day of the Brisbane Test match on Wednesday. In a surprising turn of events, Ashwin shocked the cricketing community by announcing the decision to call it quits in the middle of one of the most enigmatic Test series.

The BGT 2024-25 is currently poised at 1-1 after the Gabba Test ended in a draw and two more matches at Melbourne and Sydney remain to be played. As Ashwin said goodbye to the game, reports regarding more retirements to follow in Indian cricket have started to do rounds. It it being learnt that some more senior players in Team India will follow Ashwin’s path soon.

Team India set to undergo major changes

According to a report in Cricbuzz, Team India is all set to undergo major transition as some more senior players will very soon bid adieu to cricket. The report further mentions that Ashwin’s retirement could just be the beginning and the Indian team will undergo a major overhaul soon. Some more seasoned campaigners could possibly call it quits from Test cricket.

The report further mentions that possibly by the start of India’s next Test series in England in the summer of 2025, more retirements could follow. In the past also, it has been observed that Australia tours have brought end to cricketing careers with many of the big names hanging their boots after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Who all could possibly retire?

Skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli, who retired from T20Is in 2024 after India clinched the T20 World Cup, could likely be the names among the senior players who can retire from Tests. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja could also be another senior name who could likely retire from the longest format of the game. Jadeja also called it quits from T20Is a day after Rohit and Kohli announced their decisions. Some other names could be Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma, who haven’t played for Team India for quite some time now.
