Smriti Mandhana scripts history, becomes 1st player to achieve rare feat for India

New Delhi: Indian women’s team star Smriti Mandhana continued her stellar run with the bat in the 2nd ODI against West Indies at the Kotambi Stadium in Baroda on Tuesday. Mandhana notched up her second consecutive fifty against West Indies in the ongoing series and the sixth straight fifty-plus score for India overall to script history.

Mandhana shattered the record for most fifty-plus scores in a calendar year in the history of women’s ODIs with her fifty against West Indies in the 2nd ODI on Tuesday. It was the Indian opener’s 16th fifty-plus score in 2024, making her the first batter in the world to register 16 fifty-plus scores across formats in a calendar year in women’s international cricket.

Mandhana has so far smashed 5 centuries and 11 fifties in the three formats combined in 2024 and will have a chance to add another one to her tally in the third and final ODI between India and West Indies on Friday, December 27. The prolific Indian opener has been in top-notch form for the Women in Blue this year and has been piling on runs at an incredible consistency.

It was Mandhana’s 29th half-century in women’s ODIs as she remains only behind the legendary Mithali Raj (64) in the list of Indian batters with the most fifties in the format. The left-hander has enjoyed an exceptional run with the bat in 2024 and is the leading run-getter in women’s internationals this year with 1655 runs.

Most runs in women’s internationals in a calendar year

Mandhana earlier set the record for most runs by any batter in a calendar year in women’s ODIs after playing a brilliant knock of 91 runs in the series opener against West Indies in Baroda. Mandhana went past the South African batter Laura Wolvaardt, who has scored 1593 runs in the three formats combined this year.

Mandhana had set the record after reaching 1602 runs in the ongoing calendar year during the first ODI against West Indies. The Indian opener will be looking to continue her rich vein of form in the 3rd and final ODI against the visitors as India aim to win the series.
