New Delhi: Balding is a major cause of concern; men are more prone to it than women. Often, a receding hairline takes a toll on self-confidence and as a result is a reason why many deal with depression or anxiety. And talk of the causes, stress and genetics are some of the key factors that take the blame, experts say that some of the symptoms of it appear on the body and prominently so. Balding, too, seems to be a health problem that manifests and its symptoms appear on the hands, quite literally.
According to an expert, the symptoms of a receding hairline appear on the hands and literally. Turns out, it has all to do with the proportions of ring and index fingers experts say that there is an easy way to determine whether or not a man is likely to go bald. This is not influenced by any myths that surround the subject of baldness.
How to ascertain the risk of balding?
The 2D:4D ratio is what we have to look at – the second to fourth digit ratio which refers to the length of the ring finger compared to the index finger’s length. Experts refer to a study conducted by Chinese researchers that measured finger length and ascertained the severity of male pattern baldness. In men, hair loss usually occurs in middle age. Thinning at the front of the scalp or the crown area, however, occurs as early as the early twenties or late teens.
In the UK, half of the men aged 50 years start to show early signs of male pattern baldness. This is known as androgenic alopecia and it can also occur in women. The Chinese study also included 240 men aged 18 to 24 years and most of them had a history of pattern baldness. To look at the signs, a 2D:4D ratio was noticed on the right hand. People who found a lower ratio, which means a ring finger longer than the index, had a higher risk of dealing with androgenic alopecia.
Experts also found that people with the lowest 2D:4D ratio were six times more prone to balding. Experts show that if the ring finger is longer than the index, it means that testosterone exposure was high before one was born. Over time with age, hair follicles become sensitive to hormones like DHT, and that increases the odds of balding. Researchers involved in the Chinese study said that the finger ratio conundrum can indicate hair loss earlier and allow one to take appropriate steps timely.
