Virat Kohli set to be punished by ICC for shoulder barge on Sam Konstas

New Delhi: Virat Kohli is set to face punishment for an unnecessary shoulder barge on Australian batter Sam Konstas on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket. Kohli ignited massive controversy by deliberately bumping into the debutant, who made a blockbuster entry in international cricket. Konstas rattled the Indian bowlers with his aggressive batting and even took Jasprit Bumrah to the cleaners.

Frustrated by the incredible onslaught, Virat bumped shoulders with Konstas while moving across the pitch between overs. In replays, Kohli was caught walking towards the Aussie youngster fully aware of his trajectory and bumped into him, after the end of the 11th over.

The fans and experts heavily criticised the Indian batter’s behaviour and raised questions over the possible consequences Kohli could face.

Now, a report in India Today claims that the International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to review the on-field altercation. According to a senior ICC source, the unwarranted incident could lead to disciplinary action against the star Indian batter.

“It is now up to the match referee and umpires to review the footage and assess the situation. They may call the players involved for explanations,” the source told India Today.

The source also added that if Kohli’s explanation doesn’t satisfy the officials, he could face punishment in the form of demerit points, which are part of the ICC’s disciplinary system and can lead to fines or even suspension.

What are the ICC rules?

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) rule-book says: “making inappropriate and deliberate physical contact with another player” constitutes a Level 2 offence. This falls under chapter 42.1 of the MCC laws – Unacceptable Conduct.

Bumrah emerges as the lone warrior

Star speedster Jasprit Bumrah waged a lone battle against Australia, who chose to bat first in the fourth Test. Despite a solid start and four half-centurions in the innings, Australia lost six wickets in the day and reached 311 at stumps on the opening day. Debutant Konstas (60) notched up a scintillating half-century while Usman Khawaja (57), Marnus Labuschagne (72), and Steve Smith (68 not out) all posted fifties on a decent batting surface. Bumrah (3/75) was pick of the bowlers for India.
