New Delhi: Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has made a bold remark on Indian skipper Rohit Sharma as he continues to fight with lack of batting form and captaincy tactics. The former Indian player’s comment comes at the time when the under-fire skipper is facing a lot of difficulty in proving his might on the field.

Rumours regarding Rohit being dropped from the fifth and final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy are also doing rounds and as per multiple media reports, pace spreadhead Jasprit Bumrah will replace him as the skipper for the series finale. Meanwhile, Shastri has said that talented youngsters like Shubman Gill are knocking on the doors and Rohit’s retirement at this time won’t come as a shock.

Rohit is not getting younger: Shastri

Shastri, on ICC Review, said that he would want Rohit to go out with a bang if at all the seasoned campaigner decides to hang his boots. The veteran Indian player, who was a part of India’s 1983 World Cup winning squad, said that Rohit is not at all getting younger so his retirement won’t surprise anyone. Talking about the other young players in the side, Shastri said that young players like Shubman Gill, who has an average of above 40 in 2024, are not being included in the side.

Rohit on the other hand has looked very far from his class batter stature as he has just scored 31 runs in the last 5 Test innings with a best score of 10. Shastri said that he needs to get rid of the captaincy as it might be creating a pressure and impacting his performance as a batter.

After missing the series opener against Australia in Perth due to the birth of his second child, Rohit did not have the best of the return at Adelaide Oval and the other two Tests. He further said that if Rohit decides to continue playing, he should play with absolute glory.
