Premier League: Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri joins elite list with goal vs Brighton

New Delhi: Arsenal’s 17-year-old teenage sensation Ethan Nwaneri has the world at his feet after his goal gave Gunners the lead against Brighton in their latest Premier League encounter. Starting only his second Premier League game for Arsenal, the midfielder opened the scoring for the Gunners, sending them with a 1-0 lead at the break. His impressive start to the season continued against the Seagulls as he produced a neat finish early in the first half.

Starting ahead of regular starter Gabriel Martinelli in the absence of star player Bukayo Saka, Nwaneri latched onto a clever flick from Mikel Merino inside the Brighton penalty box. Playing from the right flank, he took the ball onto his left foot before side-footing an effort past Bart Verbruggen in the Brighton goal. With this goal, he added to his goal against Nottingham Forest earlier in the season, doing so even before his 18th birthday.

With two goals to his name even before turning 18, he’s now joined an exhaustive list of players that have scored multiple Premier League goals before turning 18. This list includes some elite Premier League players like Wayne Rooney (7), Michael Owen (5), and James Milner (3). The list however also includes players like Danny Cadamarteri (3) and Federico Macheda (2), who didn’t quite have the career they would’ve hoped for after reaching such heights.

While he became the sixth Premier League player to get to multiple goals before 18, he made a club record for Arsenal. He became the first ever Arsenal player to have achieved such a feat, something the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Bukayo Saka couldn’t achieve as well. This isn’t the first club record that the 17-year-old has made with the club though as he made a Premier League record with his debut.

Manager Mikel Arteta handed him his Premier League debut during Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Brentford in September 2022, making him the youngest Premier League player in history at 15 years and 181 days. His goal against Nottingham Forest earlier in the season made him the club’s second youngest scorer in history, behind only Cesc Fabregas in the list. The future is bright for the youngster as he’s already scored five goals for the club this season, in just five starts, making him the club’s most exciting youngster since Bukayo Saka.
