BGT: Pat Cummins becomes first bowler in WTC history to achieve rare milestone

New Delhi: Australia defeated India by 6 wickets in the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Sunday, December 5. The Aussies won the five-match series by 3-1.

Australian captain Pat Cummins became the first bowler in the World Test Championship (WTC) history to take 200 wickets during the Sydney Test. Cummins completed the milestone with his third wicket in the second innings, removing Washington Sundar.

Cummins surpassed Indian spinner R Ashwin and teammate Nathan Lyon in the tally during the Test match to achieve the feat. The ongoing cycle of WTC has been the most prolific edition for Cummins. He has picked up 73 wickets in Test matches including five fifers. Only India’s Jasprit Bumrah has taken more wickets among fast bowlers in a WTC edition, having picked up 77 wickets this cycle.

Cummins took 57 wickets in 16 Test matches when Australia lifted the WTC trophy in the 2021-23 cycle under his leadership. He was also the leading wicket-taker for his team in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He took 25 wickets in the five-match series, bettered only by Bumrah, who picked up 32 wickets.
