New Delhi: Former England pacer Steve Harmison has said that Virat Kohli should have been banned by ICC for his on-field altercation with young Australian batter Sam Konstas during the fourth Test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Harmison said that Kohli crossed the line in the heated exchange which probably he shouldn’t have done.

Harmison also warned Kontas about provoking opposition players, saying that the Australian player will face major challenges against England in the upcoming Ashes series. The former Indian captain somehow escaped suspension and was fined 20 per cent of his match fee for making physical contact with the Australia teenager during the Melbourne Test.

Kohli deliberately shouldered Kontas

Virat Kohli deliberately shouldered the 19-year-old Australian opener while the players were exchanging ends at the end of the over. The incident took off for a brief period as both the players exchanges stares before the umpires on the field calmed down the situation. While the entire media fraternity and some cricketers criticised Kohli for his actions against the emerging star, Kontas downplayed the entire incident at the press conference.

In a podcast withtalkSPORT Cricket, Harmison said that ‘What happened with Kohli there – Kohli was bang out of order. Virat Kohli should have been banned for what he did. You know how much I love Virat Kohli and what he has done for the game, but there’s a line, and you do not cross it.”

Meanwhile, after emerging victorious in the series-opener at Perth, India experienced a serious downfall going down in the three other Test matches and managing a draw in one and ended up losing the series 1-3. It was after 10-long years that Australia reclaimed the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy title, after having won it last in 2014-15.
