New Delhi: In a twist that few could have predicted, Erik ten Hag and Thierry Henry have emerged as leading candidates for the same managerial position. According to reports, the Belgium Football Association (FA) is internally debating between the two high-profile names to take over as their next head coach.

Ten Hag, sacked by Manchester United last October, has been out of work since leaving Old Trafford after a string of poor results. Meanwhile, Henry stepped down as France’s under-21 manager last year after guiding them to a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Both managers bring distinct pedigrees to the table, making the Belgium role a tantalising contest.

Belgium FA eyes high-profile appointments

Henry, who previously served as an assistant coach for Belgium at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, is reportedly a favourite among certain Belgium FA officials. His strong ties to the team, combined with his recent success on the international stage, have made him a standout candidate. Reflecting on his Olympic success, Henry recently stated, “Winning the silver medal at the Olympic Games for my country will remain one of the greatest prides of my life.”

The Arsenal legend began his managerial career at AS Monaco before moving to MLS side Montreal Impact. With his last two roles being internationally focused, Henry’s familiarity with global tournaments could make him a compelling choice for Belgium’s ambitions.

Ten Hag, on the other hand, boasts a solid club record, notably with Ajax, where he thrived before joining Manchester United. Despite his struggles at Old Trafford, his tactical acumen and European experience have reportedly attracted the Belgium FA’s attention. However, it’s worth noting that the Dutchman has yet to manage an international team in his career.

Mark van Bommel, another name in the frame, has managed clubs like PSV Eindhoven and Royal Antwerp, but the focus seems to rest heavily on Henry and Ten Hag.

According to reports, the Belgium FA is keen to finalise their decision soon as they aim to rebuild after recent underwhelming campaigns. Whether it’s Henry’s international expertise or Ten Hag’s club success that tips the balance, this managerial race promises to be one to watch.
