New Delhi: January 12, 2025, marks a new era in the history of Indian hockey as the Women’s Hockey India League (HIL) will start for the very first time. This comes just after the men’s HIL competition got underway at the end of the last year after a seven-year hiatus.
The women’s competition was never seen before in the country but thanks to the Indian women’s team finishing at the fourth place in the Tokyo Olympics to raise the awareness for the talent in the country. Although the team failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics last year, the ambitions of growing into a hockey powerhouse hasn’t faded away.
And the women’s HIL only promises to push for the aim with the first season having four teams in contention for title, though it was initially decided that the tournament would be a six-team competition. The event will be played from January 12 to 26 with a double round-robin format where the top two teams will qualify for the final.

The four teams to feature in the first season of the women’s Hockey India League competition are Delhi SG Pipers, Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers, Soorma Hockey Club, and Odisha Warriors.
Who are the captains of Women’s Hockey India League 2025?
All four teams will be captained by an Indian player in the inaugural competition. Salima Tete and Savita Punia are named as the co-captains of the Soorma Hockey Club. Navneet Kaur, who is currently the vice-captain of the Indian team, will lead Delhi SG Pipers. Udita Duhan, who was the most expensive player sold at the auction (for INR 32 lakh), will be the captain of Bengal Tigers. Indian mid-fielder Neha Goyal will captain Odisha Warriors.
