New Delhi: Novak Djokovic attended the blockbuster Melbourne Derby between the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 on Sunday, January 12. The 24-time Grand Slam champion is currently in Australia for the Australian Open 2025, the first Grand Slam of the year which got underway on Sunday.
Ahead of beginning his campaign at the Australian Open, Djokovic decided to trade the Rod Laver Arena for the Docklands Stadium to watch some enthralling cricket action in the Big Bash League. He was spotted in the stands watching the Melbourne Derby and had a priceless reaction to Aussie all-rounder Marcus Stoinis’ dismissal during the Stars’ innings.
The incident happened during the 8th over of the Stars’ innings when skipper Stoinis was dismissed by Tom Rogers after Kane Richardson took a brilliant catch on the boundary rope. Stoinis got a decent hold of the delivery from Rogers and played a big shot as the ball went high in the air. However, it failed to get the distance and was plucked by Richardson.
The dismissal left the commentators and fans in shock as they thought the ball was destined for a six after being hit hard by Stoinis. Djokovic too couldn’t believe the Stoinis ended up getting caught in the end and had an epic reaction to his dismissal which caught the attention of many on social media.

Maxwell played a blinder of a knock as he slammed 90 off just 52 balls, including some monstrous sixes to power the Stars to 165 runs in 20 overs. The Renegades fell short in the run chase as they were bundled out for a paltry 123 after Mark Steketee and Joel Paris combined to run through their batting line-up to secure a 42-run victory for the Melbourne Stars.
Djokovic was spotted clicking selfies with the fans and acknowledging the love from the crowd as he left the stadium after watching engrossing cricketing action during the game.
