New Delhi: Maha Kumbh 2025 – the world’s religious gathering, which is underway in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, is expected to attract crores of people. The devotees are visiting the Kumbh not only from different parts of the country but also from foreign countries.
The Maha Kumbh has led to a huge surge in demand for flight tickets to Prayagraj. The demand has also led to a record jump in ticket prices of planes. According to a report, air travel to Prayagraj has become six times more expensive. Ticket prices for flights from Delhi to Prayagraj have increased by 21 per cent.
According to travel portal Ixigo, the one-way flight ticket fare from Bhopal to Prayagraj has increased by 6 times. According to the report, while the one-way air fare between Bhopal and Prayagraj was Rs 2,977 last year, however because of the Maha Kumbh, the ticket price have gone north – it has jumped to Rs 17,796.
These are the one-way average fares based on 30 days advance purchase date (APD) from January 13 to February 26, 2025. These are compared to the same period in 2024.
Flight ticket prices to Prayagraj
The airfare from Delhi to Prayagraj has increased by 21 per cent to Rs 5,748, while for the Mumbai-Prayagraj flight tickets has increased by 13 per cent to Rs 6,381.
Bengaluru-Prayagraj flight ticket fare has jumped by 89 percent to Rs 11,158.
The plane ticket price for Ahmedabad-Prayagraj flight has increased by 41 per cent to Rs 10,364.
Air fares for Lucknow and Varanasi, cities located near Prayagraj, have increased by three to 21 per cent.
Ixigo’s analysis mentioned that on an annual basis, flight bookings for Prayagraj have increased by 162 per cent, while bookings for Lucknow and Varanasi have increased by 42 per cent and 10 per cent respectively. The figures are mentioned for the period from 13 January to 26 February. The travel booking portal stated that Prayagraj is now connected to more than 20 destinations through direct and one-stop flights. During the last Mahakumbh, there was only one flight from Delhi to Prayagraj. Mahakumbh will run from 13 January to 26 February.
As per Alok Bajpai, Group CEO of Ixigo, the one-way airfare from major metros to Prayagraj and nearby airports like Lucknow and Varanasi is on an average between Rs 7,000-10,000 if booked at least 30 days in advance. However, on some routes like Bhopal-Prayagraj, the one-way fares have skyrocketed up to Rs 17,000 during peak demand hours and limited flight availability.
The Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj has caused a dramatic increase in flight ticket prices. Airfare to Prayagraj from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru has risen significantly, with some routes experiencing sixfold increases. Ixigo reports a 162 per cent annual increase in Prayagraj flight bookings, highlighting the pilgrimage’s impact on air travel demand.
