Saif Ali Khan attack: Experts warn knife angle can injure kidneys, spleen, liver, or blood vessels

New Delhi: Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was injured with a knife during the early hours of Thursday when a robber broke into his Mumbai home. The 54-year-old reportedly suffered six stab wounds and was hospitalised immediately for surgery after the incident. The incident took place at 2.30 am on Thursday when Khan was woken up due to suspicious noise. Upon waking up and confronting the intruder, a scuffle broke out between the two, and the actor was stabbed six times before the intruder fled the scene, unidentified. At 3.30 am Khan was rushed to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai.

Doctors say that one of the wounds was dangerously close to the spine. Although there is no confirmation on whether it was from the front or the back, the same involves several possibilities for the future as well. Khan was operated upon by a team of doctors including neurosurgeon Dr Nitin Dange, cosmetic surgeon Dr Leena Jain, and anesthesiologist Dr Nisha Gandhi. The team had to repair leaking spinal fluid, but the actor had also suffered deep wounds on the neck and hands. These were repaired by plastic surgery.

After a surgery lasting 2.5 hours, Khan’s wounds were repaired and at present, the hospital confirmed that the actor is stable and out of danger now. The actor’s team said in a statement that it was a case of attempted burglary at Khan’s residence. Kareena Kapoor Khan’s team, too, released a statement.

“There was an attempted burglary in Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s residence last night. Saif had an injury on his arm for which he is in hospital, undergoing a procedure. The rest of the family is doing fine. We request the media and fans to be patient and not speculate any further as the Police are already doing their due investigations. Thank you all for your concern,” said Kapoor’s team.

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr Suranjit Chatterjee, General Physician/Internal Medicine Specialist at Apollo Hospitals Indraprastha, New Delhi, spoke about the many possibilities associated with stab wounds. The expert revealed that if a stab wound is strong enough to penetrate the spine from the front, it can go through several major organs like the kidneys and liver. The expert said that there are several possibilities associated with it. Dr Chatterjee also said that bleeding later is a possibility if the wounds are not repaired correctly with surgery at the time.

How does a stab wound around the spine affect a patient?

Dr Chatterjee stated that if stabbed from behind, because of the number of muscles in place, there is a possibility of long-term damage as nerves cannot be fixed surgically. A knife wound can pass through the abdomen as well puncturing the gut, and even the kidneys and liver, and this can be fatal since most of the important organs are placed in the front. Blood vessels can also get damaged.

Dr. Shrey Kumar Srivastav, Senior Consultant at Sharda Hospital, also said, “Depending on the extent of the injury and the quality of the treatment received, the long-term consequences of a stab wound can change even after recovery. Physical repercussions frequently include keloid growth and visible scarring, which can be permanent. Long-term problems including persistent pain, decreased movement, or sensory impairment like tingling or numbness may continue if nerves, muscles, or joints are impacted. Stab wounds present continuous health hazards since they might result in recurrent infections or, in the case of a serious injury, internal organ damage. Furthermore, the psychological effects of such an incident might lead to disorders like anxiety, PTSD, or a persistent dread of violence. In certain instances, people may have decreased physical endurance as a result of the injury’s physical repercussions.”

Since the spine contains the spinal cord, which regulates movement and feeling, a stab wound close to or to the spine is a dangerous and potentially fatal injury. There may be serious and protracted repercussions if the stab wound extends to the spine. Depending on whatever part of the spine is injured, the damage may cause paralysis, loss of feeling, or trouble with motor skills. While damage to the thoracic or lumbar areas (mid and lower back) may affect the torso, legs, or bladder and bowel control, injuries to the cervical spine (neck area) may cause paralysis from the neck down, including breathing issues. There may be long-term problems like chronic pain, nerve damage, and decreased movement even if the wound does not cut the spinal cord. Since any cut close to the spine might impact the surrounding tissues and potentially result in consequences like meningitis or sepsis, the presence of such an injury raises the risk of infections. Furthermore, it may take a while to recover from a stab wound close to the spine, necessitating extensive medical care, surgery, and physical therapy.
