New Delhi: Iga Swiatek dished out another bagel from her famous bakery as she dismantled Eva Lys in straight sets to reach the women’s singles quarter-finals at the Australian Open 2025 on Monday, January 19. Swiatek was at her dominant best as she ended lucky loser Lys’ dream run in the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Swiatek, who has been in scintillating form in the first major of the year, continued her stellar run against Lys, who created history in her win against Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian in the 3rd round. Ranked 128, 23-year-old Lys became the first lucky loser in women’s singles to reach the 4th round of the Australian Open in the Open era.

However, Lys’ incredible streak was ended by Swiatek, who was at her clinical best in the 4th-round clash between the duo. Germany’s Lys was a no-match to Swiatek in the first set as the Polish start started the match dominantly, using her powerful shots and exceptional court coverage to leave her opponent in disarray.

Swiatek took the first set 6-0 to complete a bagel, her third straight in the competition after handing out one each to Emma Raducanu and Rebeca Sramcova in her last two matches. Lys staged a comeback in the second game and put up a spirited fight as she managed to take a game before holding Swiatek in the 5th game.

But the German was eventually outlasted by the five-time Grand Slam champion, who did a breadstick in the second set by winning it 6-1 to wrap up a thumping victory. Swiatek has now won an astonishing 29 sets at Grand Slams with a margin of 6-0 with her bagel against Lys on Monday her fifth in the Australian Open in her career so far.

Who will Iga Swiatek face in the quarter-finals?

World no.2 Swiatek will face the winner of the ongoing 4th-round clash between Emma Navarro and Daria Kasatkina in her quarter-final clash on Wednesday, January 22. Swiatek, a 5-time Grand Slam champion, is chasing her sixth major and maiden Australian Open title in Melbourne. The Polish star has never managed to ho past the semi-finals at the Australian Open and will be hoping to end her title drought Down Under this year.
