New Delhi: Mohammedan Sporting has been plunged into further chaos as head coach Andrey Chernyshov resigned from his position, citing unpaid wages for the last three months. The Russian tactician, who led the club to their first-ever I-League title and promotion to the Indian Super League (ISL), made the announcement on social media. His departure comes at a crucial time, with the team already struggling in their debut ISL season, sitting at the bottom of the table with just two wins from 17 matches.

Chernyshov’s exit has added to Mohammedan SC’s growing troubles, both on and off the pitch. The club has faced financial instability since stepping up to the ISL, and reports of unpaid salaries have been circulating for weeks. While the management has remained tight-lipped on the situation, sources suggest that multiple players and staff members have also raised concerns over delayed payments. This turmoil only worsens the club’s current form, as they prepare for a crucial derby against Mohun Bagan.

Why did Andrey Chernyshov quit Mohammedan Sporting?

Chernyshov revealed that he had not been paid for the last three months and could no longer continue under such conditions. In an emotional statement, he wrote, “As a professional, I cannot work for three months without receiving a salary. I made this decision with tears in my eyes. But all the blame lies with the club’s management, which did not fulfill the terms of the contract.”

His decision to step away has sparked controversy, with reports suggesting he has filed a complaint with FIFA over unpaid wages. However, a Mohammedan SC official claimed the club had not received any official communication regarding such a complaint. Investors Bunkerhill and the Shrachi Group have not officially accepted his resignation, with ongoing discussions to find a resolution.

A club in crisis

On the pitch, Mohammedan SC’s struggles have been evident throughout their ISL campaign. The team has managed just two wins and five draws in 17 matches, leaving them rooted at the bottom of the table. Injuries, financial instability, and poor performances have derailed their season, and Chernyshov’s departure only deepens the uncertainty surrounding the club.

With a crucial derby against Mohun Bagan approaching, the club now faces an uphill battle both in terms of results and stability. Assistant coach Mehrajuddin Wadoo is expected to take charge in the interim, but whether he can turn things around remains to be seen. The coming weeks will be crucial for Mohammedan SC as they attempt to navigate this crisis while keeping their ISL survival hopes alive.
