Maha Kumbh 2025: Sacred Khappar Tapasya to begin on 2 February — know its significance

Mumbai: The sacred city of Prayagraj is currently hosting the grand spectacle of Maha Kumbh 2025, drawing millions of devotees from across the world for the auspicious Ganga Snan (holy dip). Among the many spiritual practices observed during this mega event, the rigorous and highly revered Khappar Tapasya is set to commence on Vasant Panchami (2 February 2025). Preparations are already underway at Khak Chowk, where 350 ascetics will participate in this extreme penance, which is considered the most demanding form of Dhuni Tapasya and a symbol of spiritual seniority within the Akharas.

The Vaishnav tradition, particularly within the Shri Sampradaya (Ramanandi sect), regards Dhuni Tapasya as an unparalleled act of devotion and endurance. The practice is initiated following the transition of the sun into the Uttarayan phase, as per the Hindu calendar. According to Parmatma Das of Terah Bhai Tyagi Ashram, ascetics begin this penance with a Nirjal (waterless) fast, followed by long hours spent in the Dhuni (sacred fire).

This penance unfolds over six progressive stages, each requiring three years of dedication:

  • Panch (Five): Surrounded by five sacred fires.
  • Sapt (Seven): Encircled by seven fires.
  • Dwadash (Twelve): With twelve fires around them.
  • Chaurasi (Eighty-Four): Enduring eighty-four sacred flames.
  • Koti (Millions): A stage where the ascetic sits amid countless fires.
  • Khappar (Final Stage): The most extreme and ultimate stage of penance.

The full cycle of this practice takes a total of 18 years to complete, with each stage intensifying the level of endurance and spiritual discipline required.

What the Digambar Akhara Says About the Tapasya Process

According to Sitaraam Das of the Digambar Akhara, each level of Dhuni Tapasya follows a strict regimen. The initial stage, Panch, is the entry-level practice where a newly initiated ascetic sits surrounded by five fires. As they progress through the ranks, the number of fires increases, making the final Khappar Tapasya the most challenging.

Khappar Tapasya: The Ultimate Test of Devotion

Regarded as the pinnacle of spiritual endurance, Khappar Tapasya involves placing a clay pot (Khappar) filled with burning fire on the ascetic’s head while they meditate amid sacred flames. This practice continues daily for six to sixteen hours, from Vasant Panchami to Ganga Dussehra, for three consecutive years. Upon completing this stage, an ascetic is recognised as having successfully undertaken the most demanding spiritual journey.

Preparations are currently underway across various Akharas, ashrams, and Khalsa groups, ensuring that everything is in place for the start of this sacred ritual. At Khak Chowk, around 350 ascetics are set to embark on this penance, while others will continue their respective stages of Dhuni Tapasya.

Ascetics Who Undergo Khappar Tapasya More Than Once

Among saints and ascetics, completing Khappar Tapasya is a mark of seniority and respect. Many begin their spiritual journey at the Maha Kumbh, progressing from the Panch Dhuni stage to the final Khappar stage. Some, in their unwavering devotion, choose to undergo this intense practice more than once, further solidifying their place in the spiritual hierarchy.

The Maha Kumbh is not merely a congregation of faith but a platform that showcases the unwavering dedication and sacrifice of ascetics who renounce worldly comforts to attain spiritual enlightenment. The commencement of Khappar Tapasya will be a testament to this devotion, inspiring millions of pilgrims and spiritual seekers worldwide.
