New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman once again made headlines with her sartorial choice on Budget Day. Arriving at the Finance Ministry before presenting the Budget, she donned a stunning cream-coloured Madhubani saree, paired with a striking red blouse and shawl.
This saree was not just a fashion statement—it carried cultural significance, as it was a gift from Padma Shri awardee Dulari Devi, a renowned Madhubani artist from Bihar.
A Saree with a Story: Gifted by Dulari Devi
Dulari Devi, honoured with the Padma Shri in 2021, met Sitharaman during a credit outreach program at Mithila Kala Sansthan in Madhubani. During their interaction, the artist shared insights into the region’s rich artistic heritage and presented the Finance Minister with a handcrafted Madhubani saree. She had also expressed a heartfelt request for Sitharaman to wear it on Budget Day—an honour that was fulfilled today.
A Tradition of Statement Sarees on Budget Day
Sitharaman has consistently used her Budget Day attire to celebrate India’s diverse textile heritage. In February 2024, during the interim Budget presentation, she opted for a blue saree with an ivory print, accessorized with a simple chain—widely interpreted as a symbol of strength, power, and confidence ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
Today marked her eighth budget presentation, and true to form, she once again turned her saree into a symbol of cultural pride, sparking conversations about the beauty and legacy of Indian handlooms.
