Mumbai: The tragic stampede during Mauni Amavasya at the Prayagraj Mahakumbh has deeply saddened Paramhans Peethadhishwar Shivyogi Mauni Maharaj, leading him to undertake Bhusamadhi. He remained underground in meditation for three hours inside a 10-foot-deep pit. Before entering Bhusamadhi, Mauni Baba performed proper rituals and removed his crown made of Rudraksha beads, setting it aside as a mark of renunciation.
Mauni Baba undertook this Bhusamadhi on Friday night. This was not his first time—he has performed Bhusamadhi more than 55 times, and this was his 57th. Expressing his grief over the tragic incident at the Mahakumbh, Mauni Baba stated that he was undertaking this spiritual practice to pray that such an unfortunate event never occurs again. With millions of devotees from across the world attending the Mahakumbh, he intends to perform austerities underground to ensure the safety and well-being of all visitors.
Bhusamadhi Performed in His Sector-6 Camp
Mauni Baba carried out this Bhusamadhi in his camp located in Sector-6 of the Mahakumbh area. His camp features an intricate representation of the twelve Jyotirlingas, crafted entirely from Rudraksha beads. For the first time in the history of the Mahakumbh, Mauni Baba has established divine Jyotirlingas using 7.51 crore Rudraksha beads. Each Jyotirlinga stands at an impressive 11 feet in height, 9 feet in width, and 7 feet in thickness, creating an awe-inspiring spiritual presence.
Observed a 13-Year Vow of Silence
Shivyogi Mauni Maharaj is known for his unwavering devotion and discipline. He observed a vow of silence (maun vrat) for 13 years, which earned him the name ‘Mauni Maharaj.’ Born in Patti, Pratapgarh, he pursued his education there before moving to Mumbai for livelihood. However, he soon renounced worldly life and took the path of asceticism.
Adopted Silence in 1989 for Spiritual Reasons
Mauni Maharaj is the head of the Sagra Ashram in Babuganj, Amethi. In 1989, driven by his devotion to Lord Shiva and his wish for the welfare of the nation, he took a vow of silence. His deep spiritual practices, including Bhusamadhi, stand as a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication. Devotees continue to visit his camp at the Mahakumbh to witness the grandeur of the Jyotirlingas and seek his blessings.
