Kolkata: Manufacturing is one of the focus areas of the Narendra Modi government. In manufacturing, one of the thrust areas is manufacturing of mobile phones and electronics items. It is one of those areas where global majors have invested in manufacturing facilities in India when they began to follow a policy of not putting all of their manufacturing eggs in the Chinese basket. Over the past 3 years, Apple has started to manufacture more and more phones in India and now some of the top-of-the-line phones are being made in Indian factories that carry the ‘Make in India’ slogan in different markets around the world.

In a series of posts on social media X, Ashwini Vaishnaw presented a detailed picture of the success the country has achoeved in this doman. “India has made significant progress in mobile and electronics manufacturing. From just 2 mobile manufacturing units in 2014 to over 300 today, the sector has expanded rapidly,” he wrote. Furthermore, he stated, “The value of mobile phone manufacturing has grown substantially:
• FY14: Rs 18,900 Cr
• FY24: Rs 4,22,000 Cr
Exports, which were negligible in 2014, have now crossed Rs 1,29,000 crore.”

12 lakh direct and indirect jobs

The minister also ostated that mobile phone manufacturing has generated 12 lakh direct and indirect jobs in the country in the past 10 years. He also liste dout the components and sub-assemblies under taht are made in India under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. These are:

  • Chargers
  • Battery Packs
  • Mechanics of all types
  • USB Cable
  • Keypads
  • Display Assembly
  • Camera module
  • Lithium Ion Cells
  • Speaker & Microphone

The road ahead

Vaishnaw then went on to lay out the future focus of the areas of manufacturing in this sector. “The focus is now on moving deeper into the value chain by increasing production of components and chips. Between 1950 and 1990, restrictive policies stifled manufacturing. Make in India is reversing that trend,” he mentioned. “From toys to mobile phones, defence equipment to EV motors, production is shifting back to India. PM @narendramodiJi’s ‘Make In India’ vision is to make India a global manufacturing hub. The Make in India program is driving self-reliance, boosting production, and creating jobs,” he wrote on X.

In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Union minister for electronics and information technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw has painted a bright picture of India’s progress in mobile and electronic manufacturing and pegged the growth of the value as a 22.32 times in 10 years.  Biz News Business News – Personal Finance News, Share Market News, BSE/NSE News, Stock Exchange News Today
