Kolkata: Shantanu Naidu, who is 32, and was one of the younger friends of Ratan Tata has become General Manager and Head of Strategic Initiatives at Tata Motors. “I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as General Manager, Head – Strategic Initiatives at Tata Motors! I remember when my father used to walk home from the Tata Motors plant in his white shirt and navy pants, and I would wait for him in the window. It comes full circle now,” Naidu wrote on LinkedIn.

Shantanu Naidu possesses both an engineering and an MBA degree. While he earned the engineering degree from Savitribai Phule Pune University, he got his MBA from MBA at Cornell University. He got his graduate degree in engineering in 2014 and the MBA in 2016. He work with Ratan Tata began in 2018, when he began working as Ratan Tata’s assistant. The two soon came to cultivate a warm relation which also got a lot of attention on social media.

Tata and Naidu became friends despite the age difference

One of Shantanu Naidu’s work drew him close to the industrialist. In 2014, Naidu made an innovation to protect homeless dogs from speeding cars. Ratan Tata, who was a dog lover known for his immense compassion stray dogs, noticed Naidu’s work and took the young engineer under his wings. He invested in Naidu’s project and turned his mentor. Reports stated that Ratan Tata also waived off the education loan that Naidu took.

According to reports, Naidu told Ratan Tata that he wanted to write about the unseen aspects of his personality rather than just historical milestones. Ratan Tata also gave up ownership in Goodfellows. Incidentally, it was a venture which was initiated by Naidu to help elderly people living alone in India.

Naidu was deeply impacted by the demise of Ratan Tata who breathed his last on October 9, 2024. Shantanu Naidu poured his heart out on social media after Tata’s demise at 84. “The hole that this friendship has now left with me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to fill. Grief is the price to pay for love. Goodbye, my dear lighthouse,” Naidu wrote on LinkedIn.
