New Delhi: Afghanistan leg spinner Rashid Khan created history in T20 cricket during the SA20 qualifier 1 match between MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals on Tuesday, February 4. He dismissed Dunith Wellalage, and picked up his 632 T20 wicket, surpassing West Indies and CSK legend Dwayne Bravo who retired in September 2024.
Rashid, who is also leading MI Cape Town in SA20 also dismissed wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik and finished with bowling figures of 2/33 from four overs as his team won the match by 39 runs and qualified for the final of the tournament.
Rashid made his debut in T20 cricket when he was a teenager in October 2015. He is one of the best bowlers in the shortest format and has left a significant mark in tournaments like IPL, PSL, CPL, BPL, BBL and The Hundred.
Rashid’s ability to bowl quickly through the air and keep the stumps in play made him a difficult bowler to face, especially since it was hard for batters to pick which way the ball was going to turn. The 26-year-old has won the IPL, PSL titles and will aim to add an SA20 title to his resume when he will lead MI Cape Town in the final match on Saturday, February 8.
‘It’s a great achievement. I never thought about it’: Rashid Khan
After achieving the milestone, Rashid said that it’s a great achievement and he never thought about it “If you asked 10 years before this if I would get there. It’s a proud feeling to be from Afghanistan and to be at that level where you top the table. DJ [Bravo] is one of the best T20 bowlers. It’s a great honour and I’m looking forward to continuing”.
After the SA20, Rashid will take the field for Afghanistan in the Champions Trophy 2025. He will return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after the eight-team tournament. He represents Gujarat Titans in the cash-rich league having been retained by the former champions for Rs 15 crore last year.
